Ukraine & Ideologies


Objective
  • Use a variety of sources to understand a current event
  • Compare and contrast the major political ideologies
Agenda
  • Ideologies Packet
    • Test on Friday
      • Includes Fascism briefly - make sure you read that page, in the event that we don't cover it in class.
    • Tomorrow: Haidt on Ideologies, Political Quiz, and Fascism (if time)
  • Ukraine Crisis
    • Using a variety of sources, write up a document containing the following:
      • Make a bulleted list of the timeline of major events in Ukraine.
        • Each event should have a date
        • There should be at least eight events
        • It should include the following elements
          • The day the protests started
          • The first day when protesters died in clashes with police
          • The day when the most deaths occurred
          • The day when Ukraine accuses Russia of sending troops into its territory
          • The day when President Obama demands Russia withdraw its troops
      • Answers to the following questions
        1. Who was the President of Ukraine?
        2. What initially sparked the protests?
        3. In what city and location were the protests centered?
        4. In what region of Ukraine does Russia send troops?
        5. What is the name of the city containing the major Russian naval base in this region?
        6. What does NATO stand for, and briefly describe its origin and purpose
        7. What country has recently invoked the NATO mutual protection clause, asking for reassurance that the US will back it up if Russia invades?
        8. What motivations does Russia have for moving into Ukraine's territory?  (For this question, do some research.  Look at op-eds or search around for others' opinions in addition to your own guesses)
